MOZAMBIQUE - Access & Travel – How to get there & Getting around

Most holidays to Mozambique are based around fly-in arrangements, although the self drive option is becoming more popular with visitors.

Mozambique is an excellent beach holiday and is easily accessed via Johannesburg.

HOW TO GET THERE

BY AIR:
Mozambique is served by several direct flights to Maputo and Beira from Portugal and South Africa. LAM, TAP, SAA have offices in Maputo.
There are several small charter companies with regional and international flights out of Mozambique.
Leaving the country by air, all foreigners have to pay a departure tax of 20 US$ or the equivalent in the local currency.

BY ROAD:
Mozambique is easily accessible from its neighbouring countries - South Africa and Zimbabwe.
All the main access roads are tarred. Motoring in Mozambique is quite safe, but should not be undertaken after daylight hours. A new toll road has improved travel between Maputo and South Africa.

MAIN BORDER POSTS:
- Ressano Garcia to South Africa - 120 kms from Maputo
- Namaacha to Swaziland - 80 kms from Maputo
- Machipanga to Zimbawe - Beira via Mutare
- Nyamponda to Zimbawe - Tete to Harare
- Chanida to Zambia
Border posts are open daily from 07h00 to 19h00.

GETTING AROUND

Flights:
All other major tourist areas can be linked by either charter or scheduled flights.
Most island resorts are reached by boat.

Self-drive:
We do not recommend Mozambique as a suitable self-drive destination for the novice traveller.
Travel outside Maputo often requires a 4WD vehicle.
Travel after dark is extremely dangerous due to poor road conditions, lack of emergency services. Visitors should be particularly vigilant when driving near the Mozambique-South Africa border. When forced to travel after dark it is encouraged to travel in convoys of two or more vehicles.

Guided Safaris:
We can tailor-make safaris hosted by expert guides with a host of local knowledge and experience; these safaris are recommended for the more adventurous traveller.

Trains and Coaches:
We do not recommend these modes of transport for travel in Mozambique.
