1 Mozambican Metical = 100 centavos.
US dollars and SA Rand are widely accepted.
It is advisable to carry cash or traveller cheques as credit cards are not widely accepted at smaller establishments and obtaining a cash advance on a credit card in a bank can be a costly and time consuming process.
All major hotel establishments, some shops and restaurants accept cards. The most popular credit cards in the country are visa / master and dinners.
Import and export of local currency is prohibited.

April to September:
Cool and dry, a little rain is received in these months (less than 50mm a month for Maputo) and daytime temperatures on the coast range around 24° - 27° C, while in the interior temperatures are generally cooler (around 5° C lower). You can expect around 8 hours of sunshine a day.
December to March:
Hot, sticky and rainy with electrical storms usually in the afternoons, preceded by humid build-ups in the mornings. Rainfall of well over 200mm a month can be received. Temperatures generally range from 27° - 31° C while again it's less humid and cooler in the interior. The northern coastline areas tend to be hotter still, sometimes soaring into the high 30°'s C.
(Please note that most Island lodges close over February as this is generally cyclone/ hurricane season)

SHOPPING:

SOCIAL CONVENTIONS:
Religion is mainly Roman Catholic, but other faiths include Muslim, Hindu and traditional beliefs. Handshaking is the customary form of greeting. Portuguese customs e.g. modes of address (Senhor/Senhora) apply. Dress is casual and formal wear is seldom required. For business safari suits are acceptable in hot weather, while lightweight suits are advised for the rest of the year.
HEALTH:
Inoculations against yellow fever, tetanus, hepatitis etc are currently not required by Mozambique.
However, you should consult your doctor or the hospital of tropical diseases before you start your trip.
It is wise to take precautions against tetanus, malaria, hepatitis and mostly yellow fever.
MEDICAL FACILITIES:
Medical facilities are basic and medicines are not always available. Maputo's Sommerschield Clinic can provide general and basic emergency services and accepts major credit cards. Doctors and hospitals outside Maputo generally expect immediate cash payment for health services.
SAFETY:
The security situation in Mozambique requires caution. Street crime and car-jacking in urban areas occur frequently..
WATER:
Filtered or bottled mineral water is recommended.
TIPS & GRATUITIES:
It is common practice to tip if you like the service given, usual about 10% of the total invoice.
CLOTHING:
Take your beach and casual wear. In the winter months of June, July, August and
September carry some light woollies for the cool evenings.
Most hotels and restaurants permit casual wear, with the exception of those that are particularly up-market.
