Brandberg
Damaraland, North- Western Namibia
Situated in Damaraland the Brandberg massif emerges mysteriously from the
surrounding flat arid scrubland. These mountains are magnificent when viewed
from any direction and the Konigstein peak at 2,573 metres is the
highest point in Namibia. In the ravines and caves of these mountains are
many prehistoric rock paintings.
Tsisab Gorge
The Tsisab Gorge at the eastern fringe of the Brandberg Mountains is the only
officially guarded rock art site of the enormous Brandberg rock art complex.
In the Tsisab Gorge there are several overhangs that have delicate paintings on
their smooth surfaces. In most cases humans are represented among the imagery
and in many cases they have been depicted in rows as if they are dancing or
walking in line. Animals are also frequently depicted in Namibian rock
paintings.
Maack Cave
The Maack Cave in the Tsisab Gorge is an enormous granite boulder with an
overhang that faces east. This overhang, the 'cave', is painted with rather
small images, of which the ‘White Lady' of the Brandberg is the most
famous. She was named by the surveyor who discovered her 1917, but remained in
obscurity until 1948, when the painting was replicated and brought to light.
More recent investigations into her stature suggest that she is no lady after
all!
RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR AT ROCK ART SITES:
- Never touch or wet rock art - it is highly damaging
- Never chalk or enhance engravings
- Do not walk on engraved rocks
- Leave all archaeological artefacts as they are
