Routing Highlights:

Windhoek - Namib Naukluft Park - Namib Naukluft 4x4 Trail - Spitzkoppe -  Swakopmund - Skeleton Coast - Damaraland - Kaokoland - Kunene River - Epupa Falls - Etosha National Park - Windhoek


This combination accommodated and camping guided self-drive safari option provides the ideal driving challenge for participants that wish to experience the diversity of Namibian habitats while exploring some of the more remote areas that the country has to offer.

This Safari option can be divided into two routes:

ROUTE 1:
8 Day & 7 Nights
This Safari includes highlights of the rugged Naukluft Mountains, the southern Namib Desert and the Atlantic Coast.

ROUTE 2:
10 Day & 9 Nights
This Safari includes some of Namibia’s most remote yet enchanting areas and includes such highlights as the “Desert Adapted Elephant” and insight into the Damara, Herero and Ova-Himba Cultures before visiting the world renowned Etosha National Park.

ROUTE 1 & ROUTE 2 (Combination):
17 Days & 16 Nights
To experience the ultimate safari without time restraint, both routes should be combined.

Transportation is provided in Fully Equipped 4 Wheel Drive safari vehicles driven by the participants allowing for the ultimate off road driving experience under the guide’s supervision.

Participation on these departures is limited and passengers are expected to assist with camp duties and vehicle recovery may be required. Under certain instances the guide may use his discretion to alter the route.

ITINERARY:

ROUTE 1:

Day 1
Windhoek
On arrival at the Windhoek Airport you will be met by your local guide who will assist you with the collection for your 4 x 4 rental vehicle. After a full tour brief the remainder of the day will be at leisure to explore Windhoek, Namibia’s Capital City.

Day 2
Namib Naukluft Park

Departure from Windhoek travelling on gravel roads via the “Kupferberg Pass” and the “Khomas Hochland” highland region on route towards the Namib Naukluft Park. During the afternoon commence with the Namib Naukluft 4 x 4 Trail which leads over rugged mountainous terrain to the top of the Namib Naukluft Mountains.

Day 3
Namib Naukluft Park

Continue this morning with the Namib Naukluft 4 x 4 Trail to the summit viewpoint before beginning the challenging descent back to the base camp. During the afternoon continue into the Namib Desert to overnight at a base camp on the Namib Rand Nature Reserve. The late afternoon will be spent on controlled drives in the Namib Dunes.

Day 4
Namib Naukluft Park

Conduct an early morning drive into the Namib Dune Belt before continuing along gravel roads on route to the Namib Naukluft Park.
Camping: Sesriem Campsite

Day 5
Namib Naukluft Park – Sesriem - Sossusvlei

Early morning departure for a sunrise excursion into the Namib Naukluft Park and the heart of the Namib Desert - Sossusvlei. Walking excursions can be conducted to appreciate the surrounding dune landscape with some of the highest examples of freestanding sand dunes in the world. By late morning return to the Sesriem campsite before continuing along the gravel roads passing through the Gaub and Kuiseb Canyons on route to a campsite in the Namib Desert.

Day 6
Spitzkoppe

Today’s route continues through the Namib Naukluft Park over the “gravel plains of the Namib Desert before descending into the valley of the moon and following the course of the Swakop and Khan Rivers towards Namibia’s Matterhorn – the “Spitzkoppe”. This area is famous for its fascinating rock formations and Bushmen rock art.
Camping: Wild camping at the base of the majestic Spitzkoppe

Day 7
Swakopmund

Following the course of the Omaruru riverbed today’s journey continues towards the coastal town of Henties Bay before continuing to Swakopmund. The last stage of this journey includes driving along the coastline before arriving in Namibia’s premier holiday resort, Swakopmund.

Day 8
Windhoek

Return to Windhoek along the main route passing through the small towns of Usakos, Karibib and Okahandja. An optional excursion can be included to the wood carving market in Okahandja. Continue to the Windhoek Airport for your scheduled departure.
Arrangements will be made for your rental vehicle to be returned to the airport prior to your departure.


ROUTE 2:

Day 8 / 1
Swakopmund or Windhoek

On arrival in Windhoek you will be met by a company representative who will assist you with the collection of your rental vehicle. Continue on route to the coastal town of Swakopmund via the small towns of Okahandja, Karibib and Usakos.

Day 9 / 2
Skeleton Coast - Damaraland

Departing from Swakopmund continue in a northerly direction along the coast towards the small coastal town of Henties Bay. From here an excursion will be conducted to the Cape Fur Seal colony at Cape Cross before continuing inland towards the boundary of the Skeleton Coast National Park and the Ugab River.

Day 10 / 3
Damaraland

Climbing out of the Ugab River Valley continue through the enchanting landscape of the Doros Crater before reaching the Uibasin Twyfelfontein Conservancy. This route involves extensive driving through rugged rocky terrain. While in the area excursions will be conducted to the geological features of the "Organ Pipes", the "Burnt Mountain" and to Twyfelfontein Heritage site. This is one of the richest areas of rock engravings and san paintings in Namibia.

Day 11 / 4
Damaraland - Kaokoland

This morning’s departure follows the watercourses of the Aba Huab and Huab Rivers in search of the “Desert Adapted” Elephant species before continuing north through the Damaraland Region towards the small Herero and Damara settlement of Sesfontein. Excursions will be conducted to various attractions in the area including the Ongongo Springs and the Huanib River Canyon.

Day 12 / 5
Kaokoland – Epupa Falls

Today’s journey enters into the formerly known Kaokoland Region travelling through rugged mountain passes fringed with gigantic Boabab Trees and the homesteads of both the Herero and Himba people. From Opuwo, the administrative capital of the region continue north towards the settlement of Okangwati before passing through the Zebra Mountains on route towards Namibia’s northern boarder and the Kunene River.
Camping: Epupa Falls on the banks of the Kunene River

Day 13 / 6
Kaokoland – Epupa Falls

Today will be spent conducting guided excursions into the region and will include a visit to some of the local Himba homesteads and Himba gravesites. The remainder of the day can be spent exploring the region of the magnificent Epupa Falls or the riverbank of the Kunene River with its abundant birdlife.

Day 14 / 7
Damaraland

After leaving Epupa return towards the settlement of Opuwo before continuing in a southerly direction towards the western boundary of the Etosha National Park. Afternoon arrival at the Hobatere Lodge. The late afternoon or evening can be spent conducting game drive excursions in open safari vehicles.

Day 15 / 8
Etosha National Park

Travelling via the towns of Kamanjab and Outjo enter into the Etosha National Park via the southern “Anderson” Gate. The remainder of the day can be spent conducting game viewing activity in the Okaukuejo Region of the Etosha National Park. The highlight of Okaukuejo is spending late evenings at the floodlit waterhole viewing game.

Day 16 / 9
Etosha National Park - Windhoek

After spending a morning game viewing depart from the Etosha National Park returning via the main route south through the country passing the towns of Outjo, Otjiwarongo and Okahandja before returning to Windhoek during the late afternoon. An optional visit on route can be included to the wood carving market at Okahandja.

Day 17 / 10
Continue to the Windhoek Airport for your scheduled international or regional departure.
Arrangements will be made for your rental vehicle to be returned to the airport prior to your departure
