17 Days & 16 Nights - Namibian Outback Adventure

Routing Highlights:

Windhoek - Kalahari Desert - Namib Naukluft Park - Swakopmund - Skeleton Coast - Damaraland - Kaokoland - Kunene River - Epupa Falls - Etosha National Park - Windhoek

This Fully Accommodated Guided 4x4 Self Drive Safari option provides the ideal driving challenge for participants that wish to experience the diversity of Namibian habitats yet still wish to have the relative comfort of lodge accommodation.

This Safari option can be divided into two routes:

ROUTE 1:
8 Day & 7 Nights
This Safari includes highlights of the western Kalahari Basin, the southern Namib Desert and the Atlantic Coast.

ROUTE 2:
10 Day & 9 Nights
This Safari includes some of Namibia’s most remote yet enchanting areas and includes such highlights as the “Desert Adapted Elephant”, the Ova-Himba People and the game rich area of the Etosha National Park.

ROUTE 1 & ROUTE 2 (Combination):
17 Days & 16 Nights
To experience the ultimate safari without time restraint, both routes should be combined.

Transportation is provided in Fully Equipped 4 Wheel Drive safari vehicles driven by the participants allowing for the ultimate off road driving experience under the guide’s supervision.

Participation on these departures is limited and passengers are expected to assist with camp duties and vehicle recovery may be required. Under certain instances the guide may use his discretion to alter the route.

ITINERARY:

ROUTE 1:

Day 1
Windhoek
On arrival at the Windhoek Airport you will be met by your local guide who will assist you with the collection for your 4 x 4 rental vehicle. Time will be spent in the afternoon in the orientation of your equipment and vehicle and includes basic off road driving skills. After a full tour brief the remainder of the day will be at leisure to explore Windhoek, Namibia’s Capital City.

Day 2
Kalahari Desert

Departure from Windhoek travelling in a southerly direction towards the small towns of Rehoboth and Mariental before arriving during the afternoon on the boundary of the western Kalahari Basin. The late afternoon will be spent driving in the Kalahari Dune belt.

Day 3
Namib Naukluft Park

Continuing in a south-westerly direction today’s route passes the southern Karas Region before descending the “Swartzrand” escarpment and entering the southern region of the Namib Desert... An afternoon excursion will include controlled sand driving into the Namib Dune belt.
Accommodation: Guest farm bordering the Namib Desert and Namib Naukluft Park

Day 4
Namib Naukluft Park

Today’s journey follows the eastern boundary of the Namib Naukluft Park along the gravel roads in a northerly direction on route to the Sesriem Region of the Namib Naukluft Park.

Day 5
Namib Naukluft Park – Sesriem - Sossusvlei

Early morning departure for an excursion into the Namib Naukluft Park and the heart of the Namib Desert - Sossusvlei. Walking excursions can be conducted to appreciate the surrounding dune landscape with some of the highest examples of freestanding sand dunes in the world. Later during the day we continue along the gravel roads to overnight near the Gaub Canyon and Namibia’s second highest mountain range, the Gamsberg.

Day 6
Namib Naukluft Park - Swakopmund

Today’s journey begins with a drive along a rugged track through the Gaub Canyon with the opportunity to see the rare Hartman’s Mountain Zebra before passing through the Kuiseb Canyon and crossing over the “gravel plains” of the Namib Desert. Crossing the Namib Naukluft Park on route towards the coastal town of Swakopmund, following the course of the Swakop riverbed. Excursions will be conducted to the “Bloedkoppie” "Inselberg", the “Moon Valley” and the “Welwitschia Plains” Late afternoon arrival in Swakopmund.

Day 7
Swakopmund

While some time will be spent at leisure in Swakopmund excursions will also be conducted to the harbour town of Walvis Bay to visit the flamingo colonies and include some beach driving out to the Pelican Point seal colony.

Day 8
Windhoek
Return to Windhoek along the main route passing through the small towns of Usakos, Karibib and Okahandja.  An optional excursion can be included to the wood carving market in Okahandja.
Continue to the Windhoek Airport for your scheduled departure.
Arrangements will be made for your rental vehicle to be returned to the airport prior to your departure.


ROUTE 2:

Day 8 / 1
Swakopmund or Windhoek

On arrival in Windhoek you will be met by a company representative who will assist you with the collection of your rental vehicle. Continue on route to the coastal town of Swakopmund via the small towns of Okahandja, Karibib and Usakos.

Day 9 / 2
Skeleton Coast - Damaraland

Departing from Swakopmund follow the beach heading in a northerly direction towards Henties Bay. From here include an excursion to the Cape Fur Seal colony at Cape Cross before continuing inland towards the Damaraland Region and passing Namibia’s highest mountain range, the Brandberg.

Day 10 / 3
Damaraland

A guided walking excursion will be conducted this morning of the Twyfelfontein Heritage site; this is one of the richest areas of rock engravings and San paintings in Namibia. Late morning follow the course of the Aba-Huab and Huab riverbeds in search of the “Desert Adapted” Elephant species. Continuing north through the rugged Damaraland terrain towards Palmwag and the Etendeka Mountains.

Day 11 / 4
Damaraland

This morning will be spent conducting a guided walking safari with a local guide of the Damaraland Region to become more aquatinted with the flora and fauna of this semi-desert region. By midday continue north through the Damaraland Region entering one of Namibia’s remotest regions – Kaokoland. Here time will be spent traversing some of the west flowing ephemeral rivers in search of the game species, which have adapted to living in this semi – desert.

Day 12 / 5
Kaokoland – Epupa Falls

Continuing north through the Kaokoland Region today’s journey passes numerous Herero and Himba homesteads before arriving at the small town of Opuwo, the administrative capital of the Kunene Region. From here continue north towards the settlement of Okongwati before passing through the Zebra Mountains on route towards Namibia’s northern boarder and the Kunene River. Overnight on the banks of the Kunene River near the Epupa Falls.

Day 13 / 6
Kaokoland – Epupa Falls - Kunene River

Today will be spent conducting guided excursions into the region and will include a visit to some of the local Himba homesteads and Himba gravesites. The remainder of the day can be spent exploring the region of the magnificent Epupa Falls or the riverbank of the Kunene River with its abundant birdlife.

Day 14 / 7
Damaraland

After leaving Epupa return towards the settlement of Opuwo before continuing in a southerly direction towards the western boundary of the Etosha National Park. Afternoon arrival at the Hobatere Lodge. The late afternoon or evening can be spent conducting game drive excursions in open safari vehicles.

Day 15 / 8
Etosha National Park

Travelling via the towns of Kamanjab and Outjo enter into the Etosha National Park via the southern “Anderson” Gate. The remainder of the day can be spent conducting game viewing activity in the Okaukuejo Region of the Etosha National Park. The highlight of Okaukuejo is spending late evenings at the floodlit waterhole viewing game.

Day 16 / 9
Etosha national Park - Windhoek

After spending a morning game viewing depart from the Etosha National Park returning via the main route south through the country passing the towns of Outjo, Otjiwarongo and Okahandja before returning to Windhoek during the late afternoon. An optional visit on route can be included to the wood carving market at Okahandja.

Day 17 / 10
Continue to the Windhoek Airport for your scheduled departure.
Arrangements will be made for your rental vehicle to be returned to the airport prior to your departure
