ITINERARY:
Day 1
Windhoek
On arrival at the Windhoek International Airport you will be welcomed by a
company representative and transferred to Namibia’s capital city, Windhoek.
Windhoek is often described as a city with a “continental” atmosphere due to
its architecture (historical buildings dating back to the German colonial
rule), cuisine, culture, dress and educational institutions.
Windhoek portrays the colour, sounds and tempo of a modern African city with
its displays of African drums and woodcarvings on the pavements, which
contrast with the elegant shops offering sophisticated Swakara garments and
Namibian gemstones. Sidewalk cafes offering Namibian style breakfasts (Fruhschoppen)
which can be enjoyed with a glass of sparkling wine or locally brewed draught
beer. In addition to steak houses and coffee bars serving snacks, the city has
a wide range of a la carte restaurants offering German, French, Taiwanese,
Portuguese, Italian, African and Chinese cuisine.
Dinner this evening can either be at the hotels luxurious Leo’s Restaurant or
at a local restaurant.
Accommodation: Heinitzburg Hotel
When Count von Schwerin commissioned the castle Heinitzburg for his fiancé,
Margarethe von Heintz in 1914, love was his inspiration, elegance was his
achievement. Today his inspiration has been preserved and complimented to
combine luxury and charm. All of the rooms feature the most magnificent views
of Windhoek and surrounding Khomas Hochland Mountains. A full continental
breakfast is served in a choice of settings. Outdoors in the garden café
overlooking the city and Khomas Hochland or indoors in the richly finished
Aschernborn Room located in the old castle. Centrally located, the Hotel
Heinitzburg is a short 2-minute drive from the city centre. All the rooms are
en-suite with air conditioning, television, telephone and a mini bar. A
swimming pool is also on the premises.
Day 2
Namib Naukluft Park
After a leisurely breakfast you will be met by a company representative and
transferred to the local Windhoek, Eros Airport and assisted onto your charter
flight. Departure by light aircraft for your charter flight on route to the
Namib Desert and the Kulala Reserve. The approximate flying time is 1 hour 15
min. Midday arrival at the Little Kulala Desert Lodge with some time at
leisure after lunch. The late afternoon will be spent conducting a nature
drive excursion in safari vehicles with your local ranger on the Kulala
Reserve.
Accommodation: Little Kulala Desert Lodge
Situated on over 21,0000 ha of private property and bordering the Namib
Naukluft Park, Little Kulala lies in the heart of the Namib on the western
side of the Kulala Wilderness Reserve and offers magnificent views of the
famous red dunes of Sossusvlei as well as magnificent mountainous scenery and
vast open plains. Eight thatched and canvas chalets or "Kulalas" (Swahili for
"resting place") with en suite bathrooms are set on wooden platforms to
provide maximum airflow. As an option for outdoor enthusiasts, bedrolls are
provided for the rooftop to sleep under the stars from a private star gazing
platform. The central lodge provides a lounge, pub, dining area and plunge
pool all with a view of the dunes.
Day 3
Namib Naukluft Park - Sossusvlei
This morning will be spent conducting an early morning excursion in safari
vehicles to the Namib Naukluft Park to the famed Namib Sand Sea and to the
magnificent Sossusvlei dunes. Departure is before dawn to appreciate the
breathtaking desert colours as the sun rises. Once in the desert optional
excursions are conducted on foot to photograph the dune landscape and the
desert ecology or to climb some of the highest known dunes in the world.
Sossusvlei is a word from Nama descent, which directly translated means a
place with many endings. Many visitors to Namibia say that no part of the
desert is more stunning than Sossusvlei, with its monumentally high dunes, the
shadows of their sinuous crests continually changing as the day waxes and
wanes. Gigantic star-shaped mountains of sand, the highest estimated at 325 m.
The warm tints of the sand, ranging from pale apricot to brick orange and deep
red, contrast vividly with the dazzling white surfaces of the deflationary
clay pans at some of their bases. A light breakfast is served under the
spreading Camel Thorn acacia trees (Acacia eriloba) before returning to the
lodge by midday.
The afternoons can be spent conducting nature drive activities on the
property, taking in the desert scenery with its unique fauna and flora. This
is not a game rich area due to the harsh environment, however, what game is
seen is interesting and dramatized by the contrast between desert and the
magnificent animals like Springbok, Oryx and Ostrich who survive and eke out
an existence on these arid plains.
Accommodation: Little Kulala Desert Lodge
An optional extra ballooning safari can be reserved to provide an
unforgettable sunrise over the Namib Desert.
Day 4
Skeleton Coast - Damaraland
After a leisurely breakfast continue via private charter flight crossing the
Namib Sand Sea on route to the coastal town of Swakopmund. This route includes
a scenic flight along the “Skeleton Coast” viewing the “Edward Bohlen (1909)”
and “Shaunee (1976)” shipwrecks and the Sandwich Harbour wetland. On arrival
in Swakopmund you will be met by a company representative for a tour of the
city. Some time will be at leisure to explore Namibia’s premier coastal
resort. Founded in 1892 during the period of German colonial rule it served as
the territory’s main harbour for years. Today this quaint town nestled between
desert and ocean is enhanced by lush green lawns, palm trees and carefully
tended gardens. There is a good selection of restaurants and coffee shops
selling traditional German cakes and pastries. Lunch today can be at one of
the local seafood restaurants and is excluded from the tour price. During the
afternoon continue with your charter flight in a northerly direction over the
fascinating erosional formations of the Ugab River Valley on route towards the
Twyfelfontein Region.
Between the Ugab and the Huab Rivers in Southern Damaraland lies a vast and
unspoiled wilderness. This area boasts magnificent desert scenery, fascinating
geological formations, archaeological sites and a unique variety of desert
fauna and flora. It is also the southern most roaming ground for the rare
black rhino and the desert-adapted elephant. This is where you will find the
Twyfelfontein Conservancy and the Mowani Mountain Camp. Afternoon arrival.
Accommodation: Mowani Mountain Camp
“Mowani” is taken from the word “Mwane, meaning “Place of God”, and it is here
that you will find the true meaning of peace and tranquillity. The Mowani
Mountain Camp nestles amongst the boulders of this beautiful area on a high
spot commanding distant views over the ancient landscape. From the moment you
arrive at Mowani, you will be spoiled with the services and attention of
excellent staff, who will go out of their way to make your stay as unique and
enjoyable as humanly possible. Mowani Mountain Camp consists of 12 luxury
tents, all with en-suite facilities, decorated beautifully in East African
style. The luxury tents are a great source of relaxation. Comfortably hidden
in your own private hide-away, you will be pampered by crisp white linen,
en-suite bathrooms, and of course your own wooden deck offering an open view
of the wonderful Damara landscape.
Day 5
Damaraland - Twyfelfontein
This morning will be spent participating in a guided excursion to the
Twyfelfontein Heritage Site. Twyfelfontein, one of the richest areas of rock
engravings and Bushmen paintings in Namibia is set in a U-shape valley of
unusual reddish sandstone formations and terraces. This wonderful
archaeological site offers more than 2,500 engravings as well as various
paintings, and is probably the finest example of rock engravings in Southern
Africa. Interesting geological features visited in the area include the “Burnt
Mountain”, with shale and basalt vividly coloured as if burnt in an inferno
and the perpendicular slabs of basalt known as the “Organ Pipes”. During the
afternoon a nature drive excursion will be conducted in open safari vehicles
along the course of the Aba-Huab and Huab ephemeral rivers in search of the
“desert adapted Elephant”.
Accommodation: Mowani Mountain Camp
Day 6
Etosha National Park – Ongava Private Game Reserve
After a leisurely breakfast departure via charter flight on route towards the
world-renowned Etosha National Park. Midday arrival at the Ongava Lodge. As
the afternoon cools time can be spent game viewing at the lodge’s waterhole
which is frequently visited by a selection of game species, including Black
and White Rhino, Leopard, Lion and Waterbuck or conducting game viewing drives
in open safari vehicles on the Ongava Reserve.
Accommodation: Ongava Lodge
The Ongava Lodge is situated on the private 30,000-hectare Ongava Game Reserve
and shares a common border with the Etosha National Park. The lodge offers the
full Etosha experience while providing great accommodation and service, as
well as the opportunity to take night drives and nature walks on the reserve,
activities that are not allowed within the Etosha National Park. The Ongava
Lodge has 10 chalets, which are attractively built out of brick and thatch
close to the top of a hill. All your comforts are taken care of. Each chalet
has an en suite bathroom, bath, shower and double hand basins. There is air
conditioning in the rooms and overhead fans. The rooms have glass-fronted
doors which lead out onto a private covered veranda overlooking the bush. The
main lounge, bar and dining area is also under thatch with wonderful views
across the plains and floodlit waterhole below. Outdoor dining under the
stars, whilst viewing game drinking at the waterhole is something never to be
forgotten. There is also a swimming pool and a large curio shop stocking a
good selection of "African Gifts and branded safari clothing".
Day 7
Etosha National Park – Ongava Private Game Reserve
This morning will be spent conducting game viewing excursions in open safari
vehicles into the central region of the Etosha National Park. This will
include visits to a number of watering holes in the vicinity of the Okaukuejo
Rest Camp. The Etosha National Park has over 114 mammal species, 350 bird
species and 21 vegetation types. The most common plains game species
encountered include; Burchell’s Zebra, Springbok, Black–Faced Impala, Blue
Wildebeest, Oryx Antelope, Giraffe and Red Hartebeest. The Etosha National
Park also boasts healthy populations of Lion, Elephant and Black Rhino. By
midday return to the lodge before conducting a late afternoon game drive
activity in open safari vehicles on the Ongava Reserve.
