Mahango Game Reserve
Mahango Game Reserve borders on the perennial Okavango River and
is characterized by riverine forest, broad flood plains, magnificent
baobabs and large herds of elephant and red lechwe. Mahango is one of
Namibia’s most diverse and interesting conservation areas. Proclaimed
in 1989 it extends over 244 sq km and links up with the Caprivi Game
Reserve across the river.
In terms of habitat and game and bird species the Mahango Game Reserve
on the western banks of the Okavango River is one of Namibia's most
captivating and species-rich conservation areas.
Main features of the Mahango are enormous baobab trees, flood plains and
large herds of elephant, buffalo and red lechwe. There are also hippo,
crocodile, sable and roan antelope, kudu, impala, reedbuck, bushbuck,
tsessebe and sitatunga, as well as more than 400 bird species, including
African fish eagles, African skimmers, Pygmy geese, herons, kingfishers
and Wattled cranes. |

The Mahango has no accommodation - only a picnic spot overlooking the
flood plain - there are several lodges in the surroundings, and at the
Popa Rapids there is a basic but attractive rest camp and camp site. |
