ITINERARY:

Day 1
Friday
Windhoek – Swakopmund
We meet our guide at our accommodation in Windhoek and travel first via bushland savannah and then via the Namib Desert to Swakopmund. On our way we may stop at the entrance to the Spitzkoppe, Namibia’s highest Inselberg, to purchase a variety of minerals from the local inhabitants that live in this harsh area. Upon our arrival in Swakopmund in the early afternoon we check into our hotel, after which we have the rest of the day to our own disposal. In the evening we can enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the many restaurants that Swakopmund has to offer.
Accommodation: Strand Hotel

Day 2
Saturday
Swakopmund / Skeleton Coast – Twyfelfontein - Damaraland
After breakfast we travel north from Swakopmund to the most diverse lichen field on earth. Over one hundred different species have been identified here, some of them being over two thousand years of age. Upon our arrival at Cape Cross, we marvel at the sight of 80’000 fur seals frolicking in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. At this exact spot, the first European sailor set foot on Namibian ground in 1486, and erected a cross to commemorate this moment. Driving into Damaraland, the home of the Desert Elephant and Black Rhino, we pass the Brandberg; with a height of 2579, it is the highest mountain found in Namibia. Our lodge for the evening is situated close to all the attractions which we will visit the following day.
Accommodation: I’Gowati Lodge

Day 3
Sunday
Damaraland – Mopane Savannah
We delve back into the time, when the Bushman inhabited an area called Twyfelfontein; translated it means ‘doubtful spring’, and refers to the uncertain water supply of a natural fountain that arises in the area. These nature people left behind an open air art gallery of immense proportion: no less than 2500 different rock paintings and rock engravings are found on the smooth surfaces of huge sandstone boulders and caves, and are a sight of sheer magnificence! Other very interesting attractions we shall visit in close proximity are the Burnt Mountain, the Organ Pipes and the Petrified Forest. Each attraction holds a story, and is most interesting for geologists and nature lovers alike. This afternoon, we arrive at our lodge, which is situated in the Mopane Savannah in close proximity of the well-known Etosha National Park.
Accommodation: Etosha Garden Hotel

Day 4 & Day 5
Monday & Tuesday
Etosha National Park
Over the next two days, the base for our adventure is the Etosha National Park. With 114 different mammal species and 340 different bird species, this is one of the highest Wildlife concentrated areas on earth. Game trails; used by herbivores for hundreds of years, meander consistently to and from waterholes fed by artesian wells. Each herbivore feeds on different plant species, or on different parts of one plant, to insure the survival of other species. Carnivores feed on the old or sick animals, to ensure the survival of the fittest. The delicate ecological cycle, unaltered and hardly influenced by man, ensures the continuous diversity that makes this Park so special.
Accommodation: Mokuti Lodge

Day 6
Wednesday
Kavango Region
We travel to the mining town of Tsumeb, situated in Namibia’s richest mining area, and travel via the “Maize Triangle” to Rundu. This town is the capital of the Kavango Region, and is situated on a high bank overlooking the Kavango River. Our beautiful lodge lies along the bank of this river, and is an excellent vantage point to experience the area with boats. The river is home to some 73 fish species, the birding is spectacular, and with some luck, we may come across some of the indigenous wildlife species found here. On our way to Rundu we will stop in Grootfontein to visit the magnificent museum that was set up in an old historical fort, and offers us unique insight into the cultural, historical as well as the complete agricultural history of Namibia.
Optional activities: scenic walks, fishing excursion.
Accommodation: Hakusembe Lodge

Day 7 & Day 8
Thursday & Friday
Caprivi Region
Along the way to the Caprivi Strip, we have good opportunities to purchase some of the crafts produced by local inhabitants of the area. Our travel takes us along the Kavango River to Popa Falls, a number of rapids that occur on the Okavango River before it enters Botswana to form the Okavango Delta. Here we will stop for a scenic walk along the rapids and forests that surround the beautiful area, before travelling into the Caprivi Game Park, an area renowned for its rich wildlife and bird populations. Further east, we enter the Mudumu National Park, where the reed lined Kwando River flows through areas dominated by Mopane woodlands, Camel thorn trees and extensive grass plains. An abundance of wildlife lives here, including Lion, Roan, Sable, Elephant and Buffalo. Our lodge lies on the bank of the Kwando River; over 400 different bird species have been identified in this area alone! A highlight for the next two days will be a visit to a traditional village in this area, while we may also take part in game drives or game cruises on the river.
Optional activities: Boat cruises, scenic walks, fishing trips, birding and game drives.
Accommodation: Namushasha Lodge

Day 9 - Saturday
Drop off in Kasane - Botswana
Travelling along the Caprivi Strip, we enter Katima Mulilo, the Administrative Capital of the Caprivi Region. The town is situated along the Zambezi River, which forms a natural boundary to Zambia. Driving along stretches of huge Baobab Trees, we enter Botswana and travel via the Chobe National Park, renowned for the highest elephant population on earth, to Kasane, where our tour ends.
