ITINERARY:
Day 1
Monday
Kalahari Desert
We travel south over Namibia’s second highest mountain range to the edge
of the Kalahari Desert. Here we visit the Hardap Dam, Namibia’s largest
man-made lake, surrounded by a game reserve and home to a wide variety of
game species including the southernmost population of Black Rhino in
Namibia. The dam is furthermore one of only two breeding sites for the white
pelican, a bird that appears in its thousands during good rainy seasons.
Having viewed the lake and its surrounding, and after having enjoyed an
optional refreshment in the restaurant of the resort, we travel to our
lodge, situated amidst the red dunes of the Kalahari Desert. The rest of the
day is spent at leisure.
Day 2
Tuesday
Kalahari Desert
In the morning we may choose to enjoy a scenic walk within the private
reserve of our lodge, before returning for breakfast. In the afternoon we
embark on a sundowner drive into the Kalahari. Green acacias and swaying
grass contrast starkly against the red sand of the Kalahari Dunes.
Camelthorn Trees provide shade for a multitude of desert-adapted animals and
serve as a sharp silhouette against the setting sun. A variety of antelope,
smaller mammals, insects and reptiles inhabit this desert- explore this
specialized ecosystem with your experienced guide, where after you return to
the lodge for dinner.
Day 3 & Day 4
Wednesday & Thursday
Fish River Canyon, Nama Karoo Desert
This morning we travel further south into the Nama Karoo Desert, a
primordial environ isolated by mountain massifs. Here the second largest
canyon on earth divides one of Namibia’s most pristine landscapes into
seeming eternity. On a nature drive in the afternoon of the second day we
observe the fragile desert ecosystem and the plant life that thrives there,
while a part of the morning is utilized to visit the daunting Fish River
Canyon and enjoy the panoramic view into one of Namibia’s most superior
wilderness areas.
Day 5 & Day 6
Friday & Saturday
Succulent Karoo Desert
After breakfast we travel to the Succulent Karoo Desert. After winter
rains, this desert unfolds in a carpet of flowers and an explosion of bright
colours. It is one of the 20 most important biomes in the world and counts
as the most specie diverse desert on earth. We will explore the sweeping
desert plains with its miscellany of organisms on a nature drive in the
later afternoon, the next day we travel to a ghost town that was left to the
hands of the relentless and unforgiving desert. Other attractions visited
consist of the Wild Horses of the Namib Desert, Diaz Point and the colonial
town of Lüderitz itself.
Day 7 & Day 8
Sunday & Monday
Namib Naukluft Desert
We travel north into the oldest desert on earth, formed by the effect of
the cold Benguela Current. Due to early morning fog, this arid desert
becomes a life supporting structure for all its living organisms. Our lodge
stands at the foot of unique petrified dunes, which we will explore on a
nature drive in the afternoon of the second day. That morning we travel to
the highest dunes on earth, experiencing this soulful, awe-inspiring place
at sunrise. At Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei we clamber the magnificent dunes to
admire this ageless desert from above. We will also visit Sesriem Canyon,
gorged out by the might of the Tsauchab River, before travelling back to our
lodge.
Day 8
Monday
Return to Windhoek
After a relaxed breakfast we travel via the Namib Desert back to Windhoek,
situated in a valley of the Auas Mountains. Here we get dropped off at our
accommodation of choice, and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
