ITINERARY:
Day 1
San Ta Kao, Bushman Village, Kalahari Desert
You will be picked up from your accommodation on the day of departure
within the city limits. You must be ready at least 45 minutes prior to your
safari departure. The tour will depart Windhoek around 8.30am driving
through to Gobabis where we will stop briefly to fresh supplies. From here we
head South East, close to the Botswana border, driving past saltpans and into
the heart of the Kalahari Desert. We arrive at the community campsite mid
afternoon, set up our tents and relax before meeting and enjoying the San
people singing in dancing around the campfire. There are normally many stories
to tell through the singing.
The Bushmen, better known as the San or Khoisan, are a hunter gatherer
people who have spread out across the Kalahari. Once inhabitants of the lusher
areas of Southern Africa, they moved into the Kalahari to avoid conflict with
Bantu people migrating southwards from central Africa, and colonial farmers.
Although the people are idealised as hunter-gatherers who live in the way of
their forefathers, the truth is that the people are losing their connection to
the past and being absorbed into societies, communities and settlements of the
region. The reasons for this absorption are continued pressure for land and
migration to fixed settlements, as well as exposure to the doubtful benefits
of western consumerism.
Evening meal prepared by guide with client assistance.
Accommodation: Overnight Camping
Day 2
Windhoek
This morning we walk with a local tracker and head into the bush and learn
how the bushman traditionally hunted and collected veldt food, naturally these
days life is very different and you will have ample opportunity to ask
questions to find out about the change in their lifestyle and how they survive
in today’s modern world. We then visit a local village and can see at first
hand their day to day life, often we can see them making ostrich shell
jewellery or preparing food. After lunch we head back to Windhoek arriving
later in the afternoon and where you will be dropped at your accommodation.
Approx total distance 825kms
TOUR NOTES:
The Vehicles – 4x4 camping safaris
Our Safaris use 4x4 custom built Toyota Land Cruisers and a VW Minibus.
All Toyota Land Cruisers are 9-seater vehicle with comfortable individual
bucket seats fitted with seat belts for your safety. All our vehicles have a
cool box on board with ice (when available) for your own drinks and is
accessible whilst the vehicle is travelling. We use custom built off-road
trailers to carry your luggage and other equipment required for the duration
of your safari.
The camping equipment
We are using two types of tents on our safaris depending on the season you
want to travel:
During the wet season which normally starts from November and ends in April,
we are using canvas tents, dome type, very easy to put up, spacious (250cm x
250cm x 200cm) and waterproof.
During the dry season May through to end October we use mosquito netted dome
tents (210cm x 210cm x190cm) with 60cm high canvas from the floor for your
privacy and comfort. These tents are perfect for sleeping under starry African
skies safe from creepy crawlies.
We also provide 6cm thick high density mattresses and a little pillow for your
comfort.
Our scheduled safaris are conducted on the basis of limited participation,
which means you are only required to erect and dismantle your tent. All other
camp chores will be dealt with your guide and apprentice guide.
