ZAMBIA
- Access & Travel - (How to get there & Getting around)
Zambia is an all-season destination, although travel in the remote areas can be difficult in the wet season. Although an exciting travel destination, travelling in and around Zambia can be a daunting experience. The infrastructure is improving but the best way to visit Zambia is still to take an organised safari with an experienced tour operator.
Zambia is a friendly place to visit with a variety of methods of getting around.
How to get there:
There are good international connections to Livingstone and Lusaka and frequent scheduled flights between these two major gateways.
Regional scheduled flights from Livingstone and Lusaka conveniently connects Zambia to its neighbours offering the opportunity to combine the SADC highlights for the full Southern African experience.
(Lusaka International Airport is approximately 30km from the city.)
Charter Flights: Internal travel is most conveniently accomplished by using private air charters, with about 130 airports and landing strips across the country, access can be gained to almost any region.
A number of charter companies run regular flights from Lusaka and Livingstone to major destinations. Charter flights are the most viable means of getting to the main National Parks, such as Kafue, South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi. The frequency of such flights is dependent upon the season.
Self-Drive: Zambia is not an ideal self-drive destination, as distances are vast, and the present infrastructure means that 4-wheel drive is the best option, but only for the very experienced traveller. Zambia drives on the left hand side of the road.
Guided Safaris: We tailor-make safaris hosted by excellent guides, these are recommended for the more adventurous traveller.
Trains and Coaches: We do not recommend these modes of transport for travel within Zambia.
Back to Top TRAVEL TIP Travel light where possible as some safaris or air charter flights place a 10 to 15kg limit on baggage. There are, however, restrictions on the export of game trophies, animal products and cultural artefacts for which you will need the appropriate permits.
