Rafting
The wildest white water rafting in the world is on the Zambezi river at Victoria Falls
7 hours 30 minutes: Daily at 08h00
White Water Rafting on the Zambezi River is judged to be amongst the finest in the world, and a day you will cherish for the rest of your life.
The rapids are run in large rubber rafts, launched from just below Victoria Falls. You can do a half day trip, full day or multi day.
Water levels
When the river is high, February - June, only the last 13 rapids can be done. As the water subsides, from July to December, all 23 are navigable. During flood years of the Zambezi river, white water rafting can be suspended any time between January to March but in most years, reverts to the "high level start mark" sometime towards the end of January or early February.
Spectacular rapids and warm water, make it "A Must Do"
From the boiling pot down The Stairway to Heaven, across Gullivers travels, through the Gnashing Jaws of Death and on into Oblivion…. the thrill of white water rafting!
It's twenty three whitewater rapids and striking scenery provides one of the most intense sensory thrills imaginable
Approximately 40,000 people per year enjoy a day on the Zambezi River which is also recognized by rafting and kayaking enthusiasts as one of the top ten paddling rivers on the planet!
General Info:
- Each inflatable raft accommodates a maximum of eight people and is guided by a highly skilled and experienced oarsman, who is fully trained in First Aid
- One can select either an" oar boat" [picture above] which is controlled and maneuvered by the guide without your assistance or a "paddle boat" (right) which requires the clients to actively assist the guide in maneuvering the raft through the rapids and the calm stretches with paddles
- Rafting is suitable for most clients. The ability to swim is not essential
- Age Restrictions: Min: 15 years. There is no maximum age limit
- You stand a very good chance of falling out but it's all part of the fun.
- The river flow is of a drop and pool nature so there are quiet periods to relax, suntan and view the baboons, klipspringers and birdlife.( of particular interest are the Black Eagle and rare Taita Falcon)
- At Victoria Falls the Zambezi River plummets into a basalt gorge which is over 100 meters deep at the Falls increasing to over 200 meters by the end of a full day raft trip
- Pick-ups from your lodge are pre-arranged. A cup of coffee/tea and biscuits at 08h00 where you meet all your fellow adventure seekers from around the world. If it is cold you can get a thermal vest. [Rare in the tropics]
- An exhilarating day on the river begins with a walk down the 350 foot Batoka Gorge, where tourists gather round the senior oarsman for the morning safety talk and demonstrates safety procedures
- Walk-In / Walk Out - The walk in and out of the gorge is steep and rocky. The walk out is hard and hot, but guides are there, lending a hand, or a tissue! It is straight up and takes at most about 20 minutes [record is 6 min's] orange juice is offered, on the way up and ice cold beer at the top
